Biography
Malcolm Kenter, born in 1987, lives and works in San Francisco, CA. Kenter’s practice could be described as a conceptual mining of the urban vernacular, focusing on the Bay Area’s disappearing signage, public infrastructure, and patina. Through a highly precise sculptural workflow, Kenter replicates utility boxes, fire alarms, and other “invisible” city materials as a form of cultural and historical preservation of his hometown. Many of these works end up as interventions on city streets, interrupting the monoculture of gentrification and social displacement. In an effort to fight against the mass erasure of a once vibrant cultural hub, Kenter’s sculptures stand as minor yet permanent reminders of a city that defined his upbringing, community, and aesthetic influences.
