Candice Romanelli, Darren Romanelli, and Isabella Cuglievan
Created almost entirely amid the tumult of 2020, this exhibition explores an artist’s work when they are forced to connect - not with the outside world - but further into themselves. And the resulting intimacy, perfectly suits the space.
This exhibition is a joyful exploration of color, materials and texture, works created through deep tactile connection. Featuring three artists exploring vastly different processes, the show is unified by a shared focus on definitely innovative techniques. Working alternately in clay, textile, paint and sculptural design, Candice Romanelli, Isabella Cuglievan and Darren Romanelli each experiment, in their own way, with the limits of their mediums.
Fittingly, Stanley’s reinvents the norm, integrating artworks into the light-filled expanse of a 100-year-old Craftsman home. The expressive clay vessels of Candice Romanelli, fired onsite through her Sebastian Gladstone residency, line the home’s long porchfront. Some hold leaning green peyote cactus. Others sit atop the living room mantle or emerge as sculptural forms amid the courtyard gravel. The vibrant, loosely psychedelic works of Cuglievan hang the interior walls of the hallway and dining room, painted on linen, the pieces echo the thread and fabric tapestries of her native Peru. Designer Darren Romanelli turns his alchemy to furniture for the show, his Craftsman Series of soft chairs inspired by the Sebastian Gladstone space and manifested in a heady collage of vintage materials; from scraps of folksy quilts and potato sacks, to the deep indigo of antique Japanese boro.
Together these unique pieces coexist harmoniously within Sebastian Gladstone, each artist united in creating work which embraces themes of transformation - isolation into catharsis, inspired thought, into unexpected form.
