Biography
Magnus Maxine (b. 1985, Juneau, Ak) received a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, California in 2013 and lives in Los Angeles. Maxine creates with various mediums in her practice, including paintings, sculptures, and textiles. Through abstraction, Maxine uses newspapers to address notions of trauma and oppression through a socio-political lens. Her work focuses on highlighting the stories of the oppressed, and demonstrating the ways humans are related through these experiences. She executes this by destroying newspapers and then uses oil paint to create abstract images on top. Her use of newspaper ties together the use of tangible mediums and the human experience. Maxine explores the identity of femininity, motherhood, and healing, through the deconstruction of materials, and the reconstruction of a new and revitalized vision.
