Biography

Amia Yokoyama is a multimedia artist who works with experimental animation, video, sculpture, and installation, currently living and working in Los Angeles. Born into a bilingual, multicultural family in the midwest, she discovered her artistic abilities from an early age and began her exploration through ceramics. The imagery in Yokoyama’s work stems from her speculation about the future and exploration of the duality between wonder and horror. Throughout her practice, the artist creates with fragments from her current reality, and recombines them to amalgamate alternate universes. In her video work, Yokoyama focuses on mixing different materials and techniques; uses traditional stop motion animation, along with layering a digitally constructed environment and adding elements of live footage from her “reality”. Overall, Amia seeks to ensure her work evokes a playful, otherworldly feeling, while creating a style that is suggestive of the future and the past.
