Biography

Nick Hoecker, b 1990, is a New York-based artist using assemblage and historical archiving of ephemera to explore themes of masculinity, sexual identity, and culture. Hoecker constructs works that investigate the intersection of identity, gay formation and masculinity, using the readymade as a tool to bridge personal history and societal signifiers.

Hoecker's art often underscores the contradictions inherent in the construction of masculinity, and his practice blends nostalgia with contemporary critique. By appropriating objects from his adolescence and combining them with overt cultural references, he creates a dialogue around the unattainable ideals of masculinity and the formation of gay male identity.
